Kayak Paddles
Our paddles consist of sassafras wooden shafts with synthetic carbon and aramid fiber foam core blades. The blades are pressure molded with deep dynel edging. The dynel edging eliminates the drastic wear associated with most other kayak paddle blades.
Our philosophy is to add that extra layer carbon-fiber in the blade while still maintaining a light weight paddle. We want to establish a longer-lasting and durable product without the dreaded extra weight of most wood paddles. This type of paddle weighs about 35 ounces.
We use fine-grained sassafras wood that is relatively specific in density. The pieces of sassafras used in each shaft are carefully matched by grain/color/and density to ensure a well balanced kayak paddle.
Each shaft has four pieces of sassafras. We also add in one layer of carbon-fiber between each glued piece of wood for strength.
We then cut the scarf-joint which allows us to get the desired offset, while also making the middle of the shaft stronger.
Once the two pieces above are glued together, we then shape, cut the curve, and then pressure mold the synthetic foam core blades.
